First Line Management - Certificate

Course Overview: 

This qualification is designed for supervisors and first line managers, to support the development of their skills in maintaining and developing the effectiveness and efficiency of the operations for which they are responsible for, by motivating and developing the people who work in the team or department; fostering effective communications and developing a sense of team/corporate identity.

This qualification aims to give practicing and potential first line managers the foundation for their formal development in this role, by developing management skills thereby enabling learners to perform effectively.

On completion of this qualification you will know how to: 

  • Identify the areas for personal development, work planning, and the responsibilities for health and safety
  • Identify how to plan, modify and control resources
  • Identify , meet and support stakeholder requirements
  • Manage and communicate information
  • Develop individuals and teams
  • Identify the need for staff and the recruitment and selection process
  • Identify and appreciate the concepts of quality, the impact of quality and the measurement of quality in teams and organisations
  • Recognise the impact of individuals performance on teams and recognise performance behaviours and implementing improvement measures
  • Identify and select management communication techniques
  • Leadership skills in a manager who has first line managerial responsibilities
Entry Requirements: 

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. Although the qualification can be offered to learners from the age of 16, in practice the majority of learners at this level would be expected to be over 18.

Course Delivery: 

To achieve the Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management, candidates will need to complete any combination of units to a minimum of 13 credits. The units which can be selected, along with their credit values are:

Course delivery is dependent on the combination of units selected by each individual candidate. However, between 45 and 50 guided learning hours is expected. 

Candidates will need to complete an assignment for each Unit of 2000 – 2500 words which will meet the indicative content requirements of the Unit to the standard required by the awarding body. In addition to the specific assessment criteria in each unit, the learner’s work must be: 

  • Accurate, current and authentic
  • Relevant in depth and breadth and must also show the learners’: clear grasp of concepts; ability to link theory to practice; and ability to communicate clearly in the relevant discipline at the expected level for the qualification
  • Learners’ work for Institute purposes is given either a “pass” or “fail” result.

 This course is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute.

Candidates who successfully complete this course may be interested in developing their learning further by undertaking one of the following:

  • Level 4 Award in Management
  • Level 4 Certificate in Management
Additional Information: 

The Faculty is represented by tutors who have all previously worked at management levels within industry. They are qualified in management principles and between them cover all major business management and marketing fields. 

The team members are also qualified teachers who, between them, have over 35 years experience of teaching and training. 

The team currently work with a wide variety of organisational providing management training to both the public and private sector.
