
Art and Design: Fine Art
Course Overview
The BTEC Extended Diploma in Fine Art is intended for those who wish to pursue a career in Art and Design and related paths.
The course ideally prepares students for direct entry to Higher Education undergraduate studies. This qualification comprises of 18 units, nine of which are taken in each year. This course gives a student the opportunity to develop and explore a broad range of disciplines and skills in preparation for progress to Higher Education courses. Some of these disciplines include:
- 2D mark-making
- drawing
- painting
- contextual studies
- computer design
- photography
- printmaking
- sculpture
- ceramics
- textiles
The course is involved with external projects which provide the students with the experience of exhibiting their work within a professional context.

Delivery
Assessments are continuous and submission dates for coursework are given at the beginning of the assignment.
There are no examinations in this course. At the end of the second year the students are required to organise a public exhibition with their final assignment work.
The overall grades for the diploma are PPP, MMP, DDM, DDD, D*DD,D*D*D and D*D*D* (Pass, Merit, Distinction).
Requirements
A minimum of five GCSEs grade C and above to include English Language and an Art related subject.
Those applicants who have a keen interest in Art but no formal qualifications will need to produce a portfolio of work for interview.
Progression
This Level 3 course is the equivalent of three A Level passes, carrying the same UCAS tariff for university applications. The course also provides learners with the ideal platform to produce a professional portfolio for interview for progression directly on to a degree course within all aspects of Art and Design.
The course also provides evidence of an ability to study at higher levels in other career paths outside of art and design specialties.

A studio fee is payable at the beginning of each year.
