
Children’s Care, Learning and Development (Foundation Apprenticeship)
Course Overview
Students will study a range of Children’s Care, Learning and Development related units which will develop their understanding of working in the CCLD sector. Each unit is made up of credits, at Level 2 students require:
10 mandatory units which include:
- Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young peoples settings
- Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young peoples settings
- Introduction to equality and Inclusion health, social care or children’s and young peoples settings
- Child and young person development
- Contribute to the support of child and young person development
- Understand how to safeguard the welfare of children and young people
- Contribute to the support of children and young people’s health and safety
- Contribute to the support of positive environments children and young people
- Understand partnership working in services for children and young people
- Contribute to the support of children and young people’s development through play
There are also a diverse range of optional units from which units that provide a total of 12 credits are selected, to reflect the student’s work practice. These include:
- Paediatric emergency first aid
- Contribute to supporting children’s outdoor play
- Contribute to the support of children’s creative development

Delivery
Students will attend college for one day release day per week on a Thursday. All learners need to be employed in an appropriate childcare setting for a minimum of 16 hours per week.
There is an emphasis on the development of skills with learners undertaking Numeracy and Communications Essential skills at Level 1. Knowledge assignments are internally assessed. Occupational competence is assessed in placement by an occupationally qualified and competent assessor.
Requirements
You will need to be employed in the childcare sector. No formal entry requirements required, however you will undertake screening as part of the interview process to check that your skills are at a suitable level for those entering this sector.
Students will need a genuine interest in working in the sector and should demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm. Students need to be reliable, honest, trustworthy, well motivated and self reliant.
Students should be at least 16 years of age.
Progression
Students will be able to progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Care Learning and Development or the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship
