Coaching and Training to Maximise Potential

Course Overview: 

The aim of this unit is to develop knowledge and understanding of coaching and training as required by a practising first line manager. On completion of this unit, delegates will understand:

  • How to coach an individual in the workplace
  • Training appropriate to the workplace
  • How to utilise knowledge of training styles to identify suitable development opportunities.
Entry Requirements: 

There are no formal entry requirements, but participants will normally be either practising or aspiring first line managers with the opportunity to meet the assessment demands, and have a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme.

Course Delivery: 

The course covers the following topics:

  • Identifying when coaching is an appropriate method to address a development need
  • Coaching techniques as appropriate to the workplace situation and the role of feedback in coaching
  • Methods to evaluate effectiveness of coaching
  • Range of learning styles and their implications for training design
  • Identifying when training is an appropriate method to address a development need
  • Training techniques appropriate to the workplace situation
  • Relevant feedback techniques and methods to evaluate effectiveness of training
  • Appropriate recording systems
  • Supervised practice or simulation to develop the ability to apply knowledge and skills

The course is delivered as a one-day workshop. Learners will be expected to undertake structured guided learning; examples include the following:

  • Directed assignments
  • Supported individual study or practice
  • E-learning activities

Learners will be assessed by means of an assignment set and marked by the Institute. The assignment is designed to test candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the learning outcomes set by the Institute and assignments must meet the minimum marks in order to succeed.

On completion of this course, delegates will be given unit certification.

Progression Opportunities: 

Delegates will have the opportunity to build on this unit to achieve the ILM Level 3 Award in First Line Management. In order to do this, delegates will be required to complete the mandatory unit ‘Solving problems and making decisions’ plus two other units from the following selection (in addition to this unit ‘Coaching and Training to Maximise Potential'):

  • Improvement and innovation through change management
  • Managing health and safety in the workplace
  • Managing conflict and assertiveness strategies
  • Organising and delegating
  • Motivating to maximise performance
  • Introduction to leadership
  • Managing stress in the workplace
  • Understanding culture and ethics in organisations
  • Marketing essentials
Additional Information: 

The faculty is represented by tutors who have all previously worked at management levels within industry. They are qualified in management principles and between them cover all major business management, marketing and learning and development fields. The team members are also qualified teachers who, between them, have over 35 years experience of teaching and training.

The team currently work with a wide variety of organisational providing management training to both the public and private sector.
