Pre-Access
The Pre-Access programme has been created to assist students with the skills development that is essential for the successful completion of the Access courses within Gower College Swansea.
The Pre-Access course is structured to give you a general introduction into the world of Access education, thus enabling students to choose from eight pathways.
This Agored Cymru course is a ‘taster’ of college life and will give students time management skills and confidence. It will also improve their ability to complete academic writing, presentation skills, debating and discussion of important issues.
The course contains four units at a Level 2. To successfully complete the course and progress on to the Access course in Higher Education, the student must achieve at least three units as a minimum at a Level 2:
- Introduction to psychology
- Effective research and study skills
- Application of number: Interpreting and presenting information
- Information technology
The course is assessed using essays, presentations, reports and in-class timed assessments. The part time course has five hours of study a week over one session (either an evening or a day.)
Entry requirements
With the demands of this Level 1/2 programme and the expectations to progress into Level 3, students are expected to demonstrate at interview a genuine interest in people, a positive attitude, the need to do well and a commitment and enthusiasm for study. Students need to be reliable, honest, trustworthy, well motivated and have integrity.
Students should be mature applicants with clear evidence of life experience.
Progression
Students will be able to progress to a Level 3 programme within the college, primarily an Access to HE programme. Students who need more time to develop will be given the opportunity to study on the Adult Progression course either at Level 1 or at Level 2.
Students, if not currently employed within the health field, will be expected to gain work experience suitable to the progression route they have chosen. Students are also given the opportunity to visit local HE institutions to meet the admission teams (there is a small cost to cover travel.)
