Olympics honour for languages student

Gower College Swansea student Edward He has been chosen as a volunteer ‘Game Maker’ at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Edward, who is originally from China, has been working, living and studying in Wales for five years. He is currently learning Welsh and Spanish at Gower College Swansea.

He is one of 70,000 volunteers recruited by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) for this summer’s event.

”I’ve enjoyed my training sessions and am looking forward to being a member of the Event Service Team, working at different venues, providing services to athletes and members of the Olympic community and providing language assistance,” explains Edward. ”I’m a native Chinese speaker, I also speak English fluently and have a conversational level of competence in Japanese and Welsh. I’m very proud to be selected to represent both China and Wales at this once in a lifetime event.”

“We are delighted for Edward, his enthusiasm and language skills will make him an indispensable volunteer at the Games as well as a marvellous ambassador for the college,” says Welsh for Adults coordinator Llinos Davies.
