Cruise ship opportunities for students
Students interested in working in the hospitality and catering industry will soon have a unique opportunity to combine their careers with a life on the ocean waves.
A specialist jobs fayre, organised by Celtic Wave and Viking Recruitment, is taking place at Gower College Swansea’s Tycoch campus on 18 October.
The recruitment team will spend the day at the Vanilla Pod training restaurant where students will be able to drop in with their CVs and find out more about the career opportunities available.
At the moment there is a drive to attract cruise ships to Welsh ports such as Swansea, Milford Haven and Holyhead.
“We’re delighted to link up with Celtic Wave and Viking Recruitment to offer these exciting opportunities to our students,” says Mark Clement, Gower College Swansea’s Learning Area Manager for Hospitality and Catering. “There are a range of different roles available, including waiting staff, stewards, bar staff and chefs, which will suit the different skill sets of our students.”
The cruise industry is an emerging high profile sector in Wales and the ERDF Interreg 4a funded Celtic Wave project, a joint Welsh/Irish initiative to develop cruises in the Irish Sea region, has already gone some way in raising the profile of the region as a cruise destination.
Work carried out by Celtic Wave has identified a lack of cruise industry recruitment programmes in Wales and this initiative seeks to raise the profile of the cruise industry as a career opportunity to young people.
“Viking Recruitment is very excited about working together with Celtic Wave on this new project offering hospitality professionals employment opportunities in the cruise industry,” says Paul Rutterford, Marine Recruitment Manager at Viking Recruitment. “The cruise industry offers great potential for tourism and job creation in Wales. We are well placed to maximise the potential of this market with our breathtaking coastline, rich heritage, culture and attractions. The Celtic Wave project will make significant steps towards attracting more visitors, boosting local businesses and benefiting the economies on both sides of the Irish Sea.”
