Overview

Community Development is designed to allow learners the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to work effectively in the community. The programme contributes to the community by producing the next generation of community workers and police community support officers.

The programme is primarily for those who work in the community and recognises those involved within the community sector. It can be used to upskill existing staff or recruit new talent within an organisation.

Key information

The programme is designed to be delivered alongside employment, work experience or volunteering, and can be fully-funded by Welsh Government.

Learners will be allocated a dedicated tutor/assessor who will work closely with both learners and employer to ensure the units selected are suited to their individual roles and organisational priorities. The tutor/assessor will visit the learners every 4-6 weeks to assess progress and set objectives for the next period.

Learners will be assigned work set to their elected units, and will be expected to gather evidence from their day-to-day role to demonstrate the application of their new skills. Learners may be expected to attend workshops, depending on the funding route of the qualification.

Mandatory units:

  • Community development values and process
  • Community group dynamics
  • Reflective community development practice
  • Social inequality, injustice and diversity in communities
  • Determine community needs
  • Community group development

Optional units:

  • Understand partnership working in communities
  • Organising community events
  • Develop and maintain community partnerships
  • Planning of community projects

To successfully complete the qualification, learners will undertake work relevant to their roles and learning environment. They will acquire the knowledge, tools and techniques associated with each unit that they will then implement in their current work environment. The work assigned and evidence gathered will be reviewed in the 1-2-1 meetings with tutors/assessors and used for assessment purposes.
